Roundup: The Historic battle of GPO - Part IV -
The shelling starts
Finally as expected the shelling started. It started of with light shelling
on the people gathered around that area but eventually turned very violent
and police started firing tear gas shells heavily. About 800 shells were
fired into that area from shelling on people to shelling on those who were
inside High Court. The confrontation kept on going for 4 hours and we salute
those brave people who very courageously defended high court. Lawyers,
common people, members from ISF and Jamiyat stood strongly against shelling.
Tears were in their eyes but the desire in them was far greater than the
difficulties they faced. Old people running towards police to help those who
were surrounded by tear gas, offering them water.People charging on police,
throwing stones at them, throwing wet cloths on tear gas shells, when
surrounded by tear gas running back towards high court and then coming back
again. Eventually authorities realized that these people can't be stopped
and started to give in. it started at the lower level when some policemen
joined lawyers and then DCO Lahore resigned. DIG operations followed him.
They came to GPO and joined lawyers in there protest. Meanwhile Nawaz
Shareef came out of his residence and authorities were unable to stop him as
he was surrounded by thousands of people who threw away all the barricades
in front of him and started towards High Court. The Battle at high court was
won, the tables had been turned around. People of Lahore fought the battle
for their Sindhi, Balochi and Sarhadi brothers and sisters who were detained
forcefully and violently. As soon as shelling stopped and police joined in
the protest, celebration began. Lawyers, civil society and political workers
knew that now there is nothing that stops them.
